Carpenter ants are most active at night, and if you’re spotting large ants near windows, along baseboards adjacent to exterior walls, or in areas where there’s been any history of water intrusion or moisture damage, that’s worth taking seriously.
In NoHo and SoHo’s pre-war loft buildings, carpenter ants tend to establish themselves in wood that’s been softened by moisture aging window frames, areas around roof penetrations, or structural members near plumbing that’s leaked at some point. Unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t eat wood they excavate it to nest, and over time that excavation weakens structural elements. In a building where the wood framing may be well over a century old, that’s not a problem to sit on.
